The way it normally works in the auto industry is a vehicle gets a refresh after three or four years and a complete redesign for a new-generation after about seven years. That's not the case with the 2017 Ford Flex though, and it's not the only way this sensational full-size crossover is something of a non-conformist either. If you want copious amounts of capability, functionality, versatility and interior space, coupled with a no-compromise exterior design that will stand out in any crowd, this stunning Ford is an outstanding choice.
Although the exterior styling of the 2017 Ford Flex has remained pretty much unchanged since it was first launched back in 2008 as a 2009 model year, it has to be said it's every bit as contemporary as anything else out there, and could still even be described as "futuristic." For buyers who are tiring of the rounded shapes of many of today's crossovers, the unashamedly boxy and angular look of the Flex is a real breath of fresh air. But one of the many great things about the Flex is that this look appears to be as much about practicality as it is about aesthetics.
The exterior of the 2017 Ford Flex definitely sets it apart from the crowd in terms of how it looks, but the rectangular shape also delivers a huge amount of interior space, which is particularly great news for anyone sitting in the second or third rows. If you want as much or even more space for people and their stuff as you'd get with a minivan, without having to actually purchase a minivan, the Flex is about as good as it gets.
Unlike many seven-seat vehicles, the third row in the Flex is more than capable of comfortably accommodating adults of six foot and over. Not only is there enough room for just about anyone to sit comfortably in any of the seats in the 2017 Ford Flex, getting in and out is also easy. Don't start thinking this is just a box on wheels though, because the Flex is so much more than that. All versions come well equipped as standard and high-specification models even border on the realms of true luxury.
There are currently three models in the Flex lineup, which start off with the SE, the SEL is the middle of the three and the Limited is the top-specification model. The standard powerplant is a normally aspirated 3.5-litre V-6 that gets you 287 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent to the front or all four wheels through a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. This engine can't be specified with all-wheel drive in SE trim, but it can be optioned that way with the SEL model. To enjoy the benefits of the most powerful engine option requires going for the top-of-the-line Platinum trim, which then means all-wheel drive also comes standard. This more powerful engine is another 3.5-litre V-6, but this time it's a turbocharged EcoBoost that develops 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. If you're in the market for a full-size crossover to transport as many as seven people and all their gear in some considerable comfort, but you also want something that's a little individual, there's very little to compare with the fabulous 2017 Ford Flex.
